NHS Right to Choose

Find an assessment provider that actually has appointments.

NHS Right to Choose lets you ask your GP for a referral to an approved provider — often dramatically reducing your wait.

Wait times are provided for guidance only and may change. Always check directly with the provider.

What is Right to Choose?

A legal right that can cut your wait by years.

If you live in England and are registered with an NHS GP, you have a legal right under the NHS Constitution to choose which provider carries out your first outpatient appointment for a physical or mental health condition — including ADHD and Autism assessments.

In practice that means you don't have to accept a multi-year wait at your local NHS trust. You can ask your GP to refer you to any NHS-commissioned provider in England that has an NHS Standard Contract. The cost is still covered by the NHS — you pay nothing.

How it works, step by step

  1. Pick a Right to Choose provider from the directory below (sorted by shortest wait).
  2. Download the GP letter template, or generate a personalised one further down this page.
  3. Book a GP appointment and bring the letter — most surgeries are familiar with the process.
  4. Your GP submits the referral. The clinic confirms acceptance and books your assessment.

If your GP refuses

It happens. Some practices aren't aware that Right to Choose extends to ADHD and Autism assessments. Politely point them to the NHS England guidance referenced in the letter — and ask the practice manager to review the request. You can also switch GP surgeries if needed.
