Education support that meets the child or student in front of you.

From primary school SEN support to university DSAs — practical, plain-English guidance on getting the adjustments and funding you're entitled to.

School (England) — SEN Support & EHCPs

Most children's needs are met under SEN Support, with adjustments agreed between you, the SENCO and class teachers. If those aren't enough, you (or the school) can request an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) needs assessment from the local authority.

Talking to your child's SENCO

Ask in writing, keep a paper trail, and be specific about what your child finds hard and what helps. Bring examples: 'They lose focus after 20 minutes' or 'Group changes cause meltdowns'. Specifics get adjustments faster than labels.

Sixth form, college & university

Most providers have a disability or wellbeing team. At university you can apply for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) for assistive tech, mentoring, study coaches and travel — no formal diagnosis is required to start a conversation.
