When Autism and ADHD live in the same brain
AuDHD describes the co-occurrence of autism and ADHD. Once thought impossible, we now know that 50–70% of autistic people also meet the criteria for ADHD, and vice versa.
What is AuDHD?
AuDHD is the lived reality of having both autism and ADHD. It is not 'autism plus ADHD' — the two interact, contradict, and create a unique experience all of their own.
ADHD and Autism together
Both are neurodevelopmental, both affect executive function, and both shape how you experience the world. Together, they create a distinct neurotype.
Internal conflicts
Routine and novelty. Quiet and stimulation. Structure and spontaneity. AuDHD often feels like a brain having an internal debate at all times.
Routine versus novelty
The autistic part craves predictability. The ADHD part craves stimulation. Finding the rhythm that honours both is a lifelong practice.
Sensory seeking and avoidance
AuDHD brains often crave intense stimulation in some ways while being overwhelmed by it in others. This is normal and worth understanding.
Executive function
Executive dysfunction can be more pronounced in AuDHD. Tools, scaffolds, and supportive people make a real difference.
Burnout
AuDHD burnout combines autistic exhaustion with ADHD depletion. Recovery requires rest, reduced demands, and self-compassion.
